Pilates

What is Pilates?

Pilates is a form of low-impact exercise system that focuses on strengthening the core muscles (abs, lower back, pelvis, and hips) to improve your posture, mobility, flexibility, and balance. It was developed by Joseph Pilates in the 1910s to help hospital patients develop muscle strength.

What I like about Pilates is that it is an exercise method that anyone can participate in regardless of their abilities and body types. There are variations for different abilities. There is a focus on proper technique and safety, and learning about our own body and how we move.

My Pilates Story

I started practicing Pilates in the 1990s. I was drawn to it because I felt welcome in the classes I took and could participate at my own pace. I was a klutz (still am), not athletic (still not), and not flexible at all (I can touch my toes now!). Through Pilates, I learn about my own body, how I move, and how to improve my posture. I learn what’s causing my aches and pains and how to fix some of them through Pilates exercises and stretches. I decided to become an instructor when I thought about what I wanted to do that brings me joy. Through life challenges, I have always made room for Pilates and I wanted to share my love for Pilates. I completed my instructor training in mid-2010s.

I am a STOTT PILATES® certified instructor, a Total Barre® Qualified Instructor, and certified to teach barre by Beyond Fitness Pilates Studio.

My Teaching Approach

I believe everyone can do Pilates. I love helping clients discover what they can do and how to work within any limitations they may have. I love watching clients become stronger, more flexible, and more confident with their own body. My sessions are fun and educational. Together, we explore what works for you. Each session is personalized to your needs and what you want to focus on that day.
